Mamady Kouyate's MANDINGO AMBASSADORS

Barbès376 9th St, New York 11215

Mamady Kouyaté brings his Mandingo Ambassadors to Barbès for their weekly Wednesday engagement. Founded as the vehicle for Kouyaté’s own music, the group revisits the classic 1970s sound associated with Guinea’s Sylliphone recordings: Mandingo melodies shaped into an electric, ensemble-driven band sound. The Ambassadors are a flexible formation rather than a fixed billed lineup, with the music built around Kouyaté’s guitar and, at different performances, guitars, horns, drums, bass and vocals.

Kouyaté hails from Guinea, where he is known as a guitarist and heir to a line of griots. First taught by his father, a griot who adapted kora and balafon lines for guitar, he made his early name as an electric guitarist in Guinea’s national bands during Sékou Touré’s Authenticité campaign. He later toured for years with Bembeya Jazz before relocating to the United States in the early 2000s and forming the Mandingo Ambassadors. The New York Times praised the band’s “dazzling vocal and guitar patterns” over a rhythm section “like a perfect system,” while another Times account called the music “loud and light and unfailingly right.”

Barbès offers a compact, warmly worn space where the music feels immediate and close, with a long wooden bar and a back room under a scarlet ceiling that hosts nightly performances. The venue champions a broad spectrum of global sounds, from Balkan brass and klezmer to Afrobeat and experimental jazz, often featuring residencies like the Slavic Soul Party. The audience gathers around small tables or at the bar, sharing drinks crafted with a nod to French spirits, while the music invites attentive listening rather than loud conversation. Shows usually have a suggested donation instead of a cover charge, creating a welcoming environment where the focus is on the artists. The venue’s commitment to accessibility and its role in Brooklyn’s cultural fabric make it a distinctive spot for an evening of richly diverse live music.
