Kelton Cooper Band
Terra Blues149 Bleecker Street, New York 10012
Kelton Cooper Band brings Cooper to the front of Terra Blues’ rotating house band for a late blues set. Cooper handles guitar and vocals, joined by Noe Socha, Steven Kirsty on bass, and Warren Grant on percussion. Rather than a fixed touring lineup, this is part of the venue’s four-piece, “nightly, sound-shifting, blues machine,” with the personnel assembled around Cooper for the evening.
Cooper is also the vocalist and guitarist in BLUES People, a NYC and NY, NJ blues band whose own description calls its approach “The New Sound of NYC/North Jersey Blues” and ties it to the blues’ effects on modern American culture. He has previously played with Kool & the Gang, Lonnie Youngblood and the Black Widow Blues Band. Writing about BLUES People, WBGO heard “a fun amalgam of funk, soul, jazz, rock, and blues,” singling out Cooper’s “rough and tumble soul singing and stinging leads.” NJArts described the group’s songs as “sung and played flawlessly” and called its concerts “incendiary.” Those notices concern BLUES People rather than this particular Terra Blues house-band performance, but they give a useful sense of Cooper’s musical range.
Terra Blues offers a focused setting where the music takes center attention in a compact room that invites you close to the performers. The venue features a bar but no full kitchen, so the emphasis is on drinks and the live experience rather than dining. Shows often run late into the night, with bands playing until 2 AM, creating a space for extended sets and deep musical immersion. The audience is there to listen and engage with the music, making it a place to savor performances without distraction. The venue’s walls and layout bring you near enough to catch every nuance of the sound, and the late hours mean your evening can stretch into the early morning with soulful blues and electric energy. Terra Blues remains a lively part of Manhattan’s music scene, hosting acts that carry on rich musical traditions.
