Prisoners of 2nd Avenue
The Cutting Room44 East 32nd Street, New York 10016
Prisoners of 2nd Avenue return to The Cutting Room as a trio: guitarist Jimmy Vivino, bassist John Conte and drummer Rich Pagano, with all three singing. The group’s set is built around deep cuts and classic-rock interpretations, revisiting the blues-rock repertoire and Fillmore East spirit of the late 1960s and early 1970s. Expect songs associated with Cream, Blind Faith, The Band, Traffic and The Who, approached as a power-trio show rather than a greatest-hits revue.
This downtown New York, East Coast band was formed around Vivino, Conte and Pagano. Vivino began the project to play deeper selections from records he loved from 1967 to 1973, pursuing what TheaterMania called a “Who or Cream type of power trio sound.” Vivino and Pagano are also members of the Fab Faux. Their wider credits include Vivino’s work with the Levon Helm Band and Conan O’Brien, Conte’s with the New York Dolls and Rosanne Cash, and Pagano’s with Early Elton. NJArts describes Prisoners of 2nd Avenue as “devoted to the songs, and the spirit” of the artists who played the Fillmore East.
The Cutting Room offers a distinctive live music experience in a space that balances a lively bar with attentive listening. The venue features a stage framed by exposed brick walls and warm lighting, creating a setting where the audience can enjoy performances up close. Seating is available but limited, encouraging a mix of sitting and standing that suits both focused listening and socializing. A full bar and a menu of thoughtfully prepared food complement the music, making it easy to settle in for the evening. Shows are ticketed, and purchasing tickets in advance is recommended to secure a spot. The venue often hosts multiple sets, allowing the night to unfold with a rich variety of sounds. This blend of quality music, good drinks, and a welcoming room makes for an engaging night out in Manhattan.
