Who’s Live Today?

Alex Wintz Trio w/Matt Penman, Jimmy Macbride

Bar Bayeux1066 Nostrand Ave, New York 11225

Alex Wintz brings his trio to Bar Bayeux with bassist Matt Penman and drummer Jimmy Macbride. The Wednesday program is billed as two sets, presenting Wintz in the working guitar-trio format heard on his recording Live to Tape: a modern approach to the classic configuration, built from his own compositions alongside selected covers.

California-born and raised in New Jersey, Wintz is a New York-based guitarist, composer and educator whose contemporary jazz carries a stated respect for the tradition. He has collaborated with Etienne Charles, Jeremy Pelt, Ben Williams and Sound Effect, Roxy Coss, Bryan Carter, and Nick Finzer. On Live to Tape, the trio recorded live to analog tape in a single session without overdubs, a process reviewers heard in the results: All About Jazz noted its “immediacy and freshness,” while Dee Dee McNeil called it “a beautiful guitar trio album” of “enjoyable and well-played jazz.” Jazz Journal has described Wintz’s playing as “lithe,” and called his album Collage an “entrancing quartet affair.”

Bar Bayeux offers a refined setting where live jazz takes precedence, featuring a narrow room with dark red walls and lush curtains that frame a small performance area near the bar. The seating is a mix of tables, chairs, and bar stools arranged closely, allowing the audience to be near the musicians and fully immersed in the sound. The venue serves artisanal cocktails, natural wine, and craft beer, complemented by a backyard garden space for a relaxed interlude. Shows typically run in multiple sets without a cover charge, encouraging attentive listening with a respectful crowd that values the music over chatter. The evening unfolds with a focus on modern jazz, often featuring both established artists and emerging talents, making it a dedicated spot for serious jazz enthusiasts in Brooklyn’s Prospect Lefferts Gardens neighborhood.
