The Songs of Carole King & Joni Mitchell

City Winery hosts The Songs of Carole King & Joni Mitchell, a benefit concert for Theatre Within. Ms Lisa Fischer and Nicole Zuraitis are featured in a larger lineup that also includes Maura Kennedy, Chrissi Poland, Martha Redbone, and Ann Klein. The program pays tribute to King and Mitchell’s songwriting, drawing on catalogues that include “Big Yellow Taxi,” “Both Sides, Now,” “Woodstock,” and “Chelsea Morning.” Proceeds support Theatre Within’s free creative-arts programs for families affected by cancer and children in public elementary schools.

Fischer is a Grammy and Oscar-winning vocalist whose more than four decades of work span soul, jazz, rock, gospel, pop, folk, and classical. Her collaborators include Keith Richards, Luther Vandross, Sting, Tina Turner, Nine Inch Nails, and Alonzo King LINES Ballet; she also found a more self-directed path with Grand Baton after the Oscar-winning documentary 20 Feet From Stardom. Connecticut’s Zuraitis is a Grammy Award-winning jazz vocalist, pianist, and songwriter who has worked with Antonio Hart, Dave Liebman, and Jane Monheit, and appeared at Birdland, the Blue Note Jazz Club, and the Newport Jazz Festival. Reviewers have praised her “gorgeous, pliable voice,” “delicious sweetness in her upper register,” and called her “an accomplished pianist and a fine songwriter.”
