Smoke Jazz Club2751 Broadway, New York 10025
Eric Alexander brings a new all-star quartet to Smoke Jazz Club for the record-release evening for Fifth Quadrant, his first album as a leader for Smoke Sessions and the group’s first recording. Alexander plays tenor saxophone with Cyrus Chestnut on piano, Nat Reeves on bass, and Carl Allen on drums. The album pairs Alexander’s new compositions with modern classics, with the four musicians drawing on a shared commitment to melody and swing. This is a dinner show.
Alexander has been a leading voice in modern jazz since emerging in the early 1990s, recognized for a powerful sound, a deep command of bebop, and expressive improvising. His work has included performances and recordings with Pat Martino, Horace Silver, McCoy Tyner, George Coleman, Freddie Cole, and the cooperative sextet One for All. His longstanding relationships with Chestnut, Reeves, and Allen give this quartet considerable musical history. All Music Guide calls him “one of the giants of the tenor sax”; All About Jazz describes him as “one of the more emotive and resourceful improvisers on the scene,” and NPR has hailed him as “one of the finest bebop saxophonists in the world.”
