Geoffrey Keezer Trio with Yasushi Nakamura and Billy Kilson
Birdland315 West 44th Street, New York 10036
Geoffrey Keezer brings his trio to Birdland Theater for a late set with Yasushi Nakamura on bass and Billy Kilson on drums. The GRAMMY-winning pianist and composer leads an all-star three-piece, giving the evening a direct focus on the interplay between piano, bass and drums.
Keezer has been a major figure in New York jazz piano since 1989, when he became the last pianist to work with Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers. His touring and recording collaborators include Ray Brown, Roy Hargrove, Joshua Redman, Diana Krall, Wayne Shorter, Dianne Reeves, Christian McBride and Sting. Time praised his “virtuosity and sheer musical wit and intelligence” and his ability to turn disparate influences into “an original and compelling whole.” Sting called him a “superb technician and improviser,” as well as a composer and conceptualist who preserves “the overall line and the DNA of the song” in everything he plays.
