CINCO12 - A TRIBUTE TO SELENA

Barbès376 9th St, New York 11215

CINCO 12 brings a full Brooklyn ensemble to Barbès for a tribute to Selena Quintanilla Perez, honoring the late singer through many of her well-loved songs. Jenny Luna sings, with Skye Steele on violin, synth and background vocals; Barrie McClain adds background vocals. The band also includes Joshua Camp on synth, keys and accordion, Viva DeConcini on guitar, Michael Winograd on clarinet and sax, Dawn Drake on bass, Neil Ochoa on percussion and Ashley Baier on drum set.

The project was created by Brooklyn musicians Luna, Winograd and Steele, with its focus firmly on the music of Selena Quintanilla Perez, widely known as the “Queen of Tejano Music.” Rather than presenting a loosely themed set, CINCO 12 is built as a dedicated band interpretation of her songbook, drawing its personnel from Brooklyn’s music community. The arrangement is notably expansive: vocals, violin, clarinet, saxophone, accordion, keyboards, guitar, bass, percussion and drums give the group a broad palette for bringing Selena’s songs to life.

Barbès offers a compact, warmly worn space where the music feels immediate and close, with a long wooden bar and a back room under a scarlet ceiling that hosts nightly performances. The venue champions a broad spectrum of global sounds, from Balkan brass and klezmer to Afrobeat and experimental jazz, often featuring residencies like the Slavic Soul Party. The audience gathers around small tables or at the bar, sharing drinks crafted with a nod to French spirits, while the music invites attentive listening rather than loud conversation. Shows usually have a suggested donation instead of a cover charge, creating a welcoming environment where the focus is on the artists. The venue’s commitment to accessibility and its role in Brooklyn’s cultural fabric make it a distinctive spot for an evening of richly diverse live music.
