Cabaret Room: Pangea Jazz Night Series: JANICE FRIEDMAN, 7:00pm, cash cover

Pangea178 2nd Avenue, New York 10003

Janice Friedman leads this Pangea Jazz Night Series date in the Cabaret Room. The New York pianist, vocalist, composer, lyricist and arranger will present compositions from her forthcoming album, Janice the Pianist with The Best Band. The listing does not confirm the personnel for this particular evening, so expect Friedman as the billed artist without assumptions about accompanying players. It is a focused early-evening jazz set in Pangea’s dinner-service cabaret room.

A native New Yorker, Friedman is a seasoned jazz pianist and singer whose musical vocabulary takes in the pop of the 1960s and 1970s, show tunes, blues, classical music, Brazilian music and jazz. She studied jazz at Indiana University, toured with the Woody Herman Orchestra, and was the first and only woman in the Buddy Rich Big Band Machine. Her credits include recordings with Milt Hinton, Warren Vaché, Billy Higgins and Claudio Roditi; she has also joined musical forces with Lew Tabackin and Joe Lovano. Friedman appeared on Marian McPartland’s Piano Jazz and toured with McPartland. John Wilson of The New York Times called her JVC Jazz Festival performance “the highlight of the program,” while JazzTimes described her singing as “appealing and intelligent.”

Pangea offers a distinctive evening where live music and dining merge in a cabaret setting that feels like stepping into a classic New York supper club. The room features communal seating arranged on a first-come, first-served basis, encouraging a shared experience among guests. The venue emphasizes the performers, with ticket prices supporting artists and production, while a $20 food and beverage minimum ensures a full dinner and drink service throughout the night. Shows typically start early evening, with the house opening at 6:00pm to allow ample time for ordering. Expect a night focused on attentive listening, where the music, from jazz to storytelling performances, takes center stage in a space designed for connection and immersion rather than casual chatter.
