Brian Charette Sextette
The Django2 6th Avenue, New York 10013
Brian Charette Sextette brings Charette’s organ-led project to The Django. The group is built around Hammond B3, drums and four horn players, pairing B3-and-drum groove with the swing of a substantial woodwind front line. The personnel for this performance has not been announced, but the sextet’s format points to an ensemble-focused set with room for solo features rather than a standard organ-combo workout.
A New York-based Hammond B3 organist, Charette has been called on by Joni Mitchell, Chaka Khan, Paul Simon, Cyndi Lauper, Houston Person and Oz Noy. His sextette’s first album, Music for Organ Sextette, drew notice for its unusual merger of organ rhythm-section drive and layered horns. Jazz at Lincoln Center called the band “a funky take on the jazz organ band,” adding that its music is “more compositional, less soloistic, even though there are lots of solos.” All About Jazz praised its “textural exploration” and “groove variations,” while Something Else! said the record “shake[s] up the traditional organ combo format.”
The Django offers a subterranean jazz experience inspired by Parisian boîtes, with vaulted ceilings and exposed brick walls that frame a stage equipped with a state-of-the-art Meyer Sound system.
