Brandee Younger
Birdland315 West 44th Street, New York 10036
Brandee Younger is billed at Birdland for an evening with no accompanying musicians, guest artists, tribute, release celebration, or other special program announced in the listing. The harpist, composer and bandleader will bring her work to the Manhattan club, whose table seating places listeners close to the performance in a room built for focused jazz sets.
Younger grew up on Long Island, singing gospel and studying classical harp while developing a love of hip-hop and the vintage soul sampled by rap producers. As a teenager, she was introduced by her father to Alice Coltrane, a formative discovery that shaped her path. Her music links spiritual jazz and classical training with the rhythmic pull of R&B and hip-hop. Her 2021 Impulse! Records debut, Somewhere Different, included “Beautiful Is Black,” which received a Grammy nomination for Best Instrumental Composition and made her the first Black female solo artist nominated in that category. Her 2023 album Brand New Life reworked newly discovered compositions by Dorothy Ashby and won the 2024 NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Jazz Album. In 2025, she released the more personal, reflective Gadabout Season, focused on her original music. Younger also teaches at New York University and the New School.
