Al Carty Group
The Django2 6th Avenue, New York 10013
Al Carty Group brings bassist and musical director Al “Boogie” Carty to The Django with Miles Robertson on keyboards, Steven Salcedo on saxophone and Otis Brown III on drums. The four-piece draws on Carty’s work across pop, R&B, soul, jazz and gospel, with the group built around the bass-led pulse The Django calls his “ground-shaking groove” and “otherworldly sense of time.”
Bronx-born Carty is a bassist whose collaborators include Rob Thomas, Enrique Iglesias, Toni Braxton, Alicia Keys, Christina Aguilera, Ed Sheeran, J. Cole and Queen Latifah. NYC Jazz Guide describes his playing as possessing a “deep, soulful groove” alongside a “sophisticated harmonic approach.” In an interview for Low End Nation, Cameron Dougall remembered hearing Carty sit in at a Toronto show and being “blown away at the pocket, groove and sheer musicianship.” This group setting puts those qualities in conversation with keyboards, saxophone and drums, with Carty directing the band from the bass chair.
The Django offers a subterranean jazz experience inspired by Parisian boîtes, with vaulted ceilings and exposed brick walls that frame a stage equipped with a state-of-the-art Meyer Sound system. The venue combines two cocktail bars and an open dining area where you can enjoy an elevated menu alongside live performances every night. The evening unfolds with a focus on attentive listening, enhanced by award-winning cocktails crafted by Natasha David and a selection of small plates and dinner options. Shows require a cover charge and reservations are recommended to secure your spot. The setting invites you to settle in for a night of rich jazz sounds, fine food, and carefully mixed drinks, all within the cellar level of the Roxy Hotel, creating a distinct mood that feels both exclusive and welcoming.
