Alex Laurenzi
Bar Bayeux1066 Nostrand Ave, New York 11225
Alex Laurenzi is billed for a Saturday night at Bar Bayeux. The listing names Laurenzi alone and gives no accompanying musicians or formation, so the night is best understood as a Laurenzi-led jazz performance rather than a billed band set. Bar Bayeux’s schedule presents the engagement as an evening of two performances, with no further theme, guest, release, tribute, or repertoire details announced.
Laurenzi is a saxophonist, composer, arranger, and educator from Mountain Lakes, New Jersey. The New Jersey Jazz Society calls him “a force to be reckoned with on alto saxophone,” describing his playing as “soulful, passionate.” His work has included performances with Christian McBride, Wynton Marsalis, Archie Shepp, Rudresh Mahanthappa, Gerald Clayton, and Ambrose Akinmusire. His own materials document projects in several formats, including a sextet, though they do not establish which musicians, if any, will join him here. Shanghai Jazz has described his band as offering “a tremendous show,” while the available information points most clearly to a musician whose playing and arranging move through a broad network of contemporary jazz collaborators.
Bar Bayeux offers a refined setting where live jazz takes precedence, featuring a narrow room with dark red walls and lush curtains that frame a small performance area near the bar. The seating is a mix of tables, chairs, and bar stools arranged closely, allowing the audience to be near the musicians and fully immersed in the sound. The venue serves artisanal cocktails, natural wine, and craft beer, complemented by a backyard garden space for a relaxed interlude. Shows typically run in multiple sets without a cover charge, encouraging attentive listening with a respectful crowd that values the music over chatter. The evening unfolds with a focus on modern jazz, often featuring both established artists and emerging talents, making it a dedicated spot for serious jazz enthusiasts in Brooklyn’s Prospect Lefferts Gardens neighborhood.
