Erika Matsuo Birthday Concert
Drom85 Avenue A, New York 10009
Erika Matsuo marks her birthday with a concert at Drom. The jazz vocalist and composer’s work encompasses jazz, Brazilian music and original songs with her own arrangements; a live visual-art performance with Nanae Itoi is also part of the evening.
Born and raised in Fukuoka, Japan, Matsuo is now based in New York. Sheila Jordan called her singing “heartfelt and honest,” while Dr. Lonnie Smith praised the sentiment and warmth in her voice. All About Jazz described her debut, Obsession, as “beautifully produced” and “finely performed.”
Drom offers a richly textured experience where music from around the world fills a compact, warmly lit room in Manhattan's East Village. The venue features a bar and serves small plates inspired by Spanish, Turkish, and Italian cuisines, complemented by an eclectic wine and cocktail list. Shows here often highlight cultural diversity, ranging from jazz and electronic to soul and world music, creating a night where attentive listening blends with socializing over drinks. Seating is available but limited, encouraging a close connection to the performers.
