WANDA CIVIC aka MCP
Groove125 West 3rd Street, New York 10012
Wanda Civic, performing as MCP, comes to Groove with her group the Miranda Rites for their first appearance at the club. The listing frames the set around neo-soul favorites and funky originals, placing Civic in a group setting rather than presenting her documented one-woman show. No individual members or further details of the Miranda Rites’ lineup are given, but the billing points to a night built around Civic’s songs and the group’s repertoire.
Civic is a Colombian-Texan artist described as a classically trained vocalist, competitive whistler and self-taught instrumentalist. Her work has taken her to late-night television, National Public Radio and stages around the world. Her recorded releases include the singles “Wrong Thing” and “Tongue Tied,” along with Live in Paris, described as “a beautifully raw take on her one-woman-show.” Elsewhere, Civic has appeared as vocalist and longtime collaborator with the Midtown Riders, a project described as a fusion of R&B and jazz inspired by D’Angelo and Charlie Hunter. That listing praises her “rare improvisational technique and effortless command of complex harmony,” and notes an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
