David Ostwald’s Louis Armstrong Eternity Band
Birdland315 West 44th Street, New York 10036
David Ostwald’s Louis Armstrong Eternity Band brings its long-running weekly Birdland residency to the room for a traditional-jazz set shaped by the work of Louis Armstrong, Bix Beiderbecke, Duke Ellington, Jelly Roll Morton and their colleagues. Ostwald leads the group on tuba, with a rotating cast of New York hot-jazz players, so the personnel for this date is left open while the band’s repertory and collective drive remain the focus. The engagement is in its 21st year at Birdland.
A New York-based ensemble, the Eternity Band draws on jazz of the 1920s and 1930s while ranging across music by many composers. Its second album, made with blues singer Big Joe Turner, received a Grammy nomination. Over the years, the group has welcomed guests including Wynton Marsalis, Dick Hyman, Jon Hendricks, Clark Terry, Jon Faddis, Joe Wilder and Benny Waters. Producer George Avakian said, “you’ll hear them swing a variety of styles in music by a wide range of composers.” Critics have described the band as “playful and skilled” with “deep respect for the material”; The Syncopated Times praised its “top-notch musicianship,” while All About Jazz heard “more than a dose of fun” and “something profound.”
Birdland offers a refined jazz experience in a room where the audience sits at tables close to the stage, allowing every note to reach you clearly. The venue features a full menu with dishes like New Orleans-style gumbo alongside a well-stocked bar, making it easy to enjoy a meal or drinks while listening. Each show is ticketed per set, encouraging focused listening as the music unfolds in roughly 45-minute segments. The club’s walls echo decades of jazz history, having hosted legends and continuing to attract top contemporary artists. Located in Manhattan’s Theater District, the space balances a serious music environment with the energy of a night out, where attentive audiences savor the performances without distraction. Booking ahead is essential, as the club fills quickly for its celebrated lineup.
