Who’s Live Today?

Tomohiro Mori

Arthur's Tavern57 Grove Street, New York 10014

Tomohiro Mori is billed at Arthur’s Tavern for this early evening set, with no accompanying performers or specific program listed. The Fukuoka-born drummer, composer and educator brings a musical path that began unusually early: drums at three, piano at five, and family Beatles-cover performances with his pianist mother and guitarist father. He first formed a jazz band with friends at thirteen, after a pianist friend invited him into the music.

Mori has been a New York-based professional musician since 2015, following a scholarship to Berklee College of Music at seventeen. His teachers there included Ralph Peterson Jr., Terri Lyne Carrington, Kenny Washington, Rodney Green, Darren Barrett, Dave Santoro and Hal Crook. His debut album, Grand Slam, arrived in December 2015, followed by a Japan release tour with Takeshi Ohbayashi, Tamir Shmerling and Braxton Cook; his second album, Uptown Bound, was released in 2017 and toured in Japan the following January. The venue also notes performances at New York venues and on US tours.

Arthur's Tavern is a basement club in the West Village where jazz, Latin, and blues are played with deep roots and modern energy. The stage is small, the room intimate, and the audience sits close to the musicians, often with a few people standing near the back. Shows start around 5 PM and go late, with some sets extending into the early hours. The club has a history of hosting top-tier performers since 2001, including regular appearances by Yuichi Hirakawa Jazz Group. It's a place where music is the center, and conversation flows naturally between the audience and the performers.
