KRIS GRUDA - Solo Guitar

KRIS GRUDA

Downtown Music Gallery13 Monroe Street, New York 10002

Kris Gruda takes the guitar alone for a solo set in Downtown Music Gallery’s 35th Anniversary In-Store Concert Series. His performance sits between Ole Mathison’s solo saxophone opening set and a later quartet of Patrick Golden, Anton Ponomarev, Matt Hollenberg, and Adam Lane. It is a focused one-player bill within the gallery’s continuing Tuesday program of creative music.

Brooklyn-based experimental guitarist Gruda describes his work as “free jazz/noise/soul.” He is best known for Plays for You, a 2023 Palilalia Records LP assembled from audio drawn from Instagram videos he posted in 2020 and 2021. Although this appearance is strictly solo guitar, Gruda also performs in groups: a Downtown Music Gallery newsletter has billed him alongside saxophonist Tom Weeks and drummer Mike Pride. The available material offers no reviewer commentary, but the solo format puts the emphasis on the individual language heard across his recorded and collaborative work.

Downtown Music Gallery offers a unique experience for those drawn to adventurous live music in a basement setting beneath an art gallery and beauty salon. The room is modest in size, fostering a close connection between performers and audience, who gather mostly to listen attentively. Shows are free with donations encouraged, and concerts typically begin early evening on Tuesdays, featuring multiple sets of creative, often experimental music. The venue lacks a full kitchen but has a bar, encouraging a focused yet relaxed environment where conversation takes a backseat to the music. Located on the east side of Chinatown, near East Broadway and the Bowery's end, it’s accessible by subway and bus. The space’s raw, unadorned walls and intimate layout make it a distinctive spot for discovering innovative sounds in Manhattan.
