Joe Farnsworth Quartet
The Django2 6th Avenue, New York 10013
Joe Farnsworth brings his quartet to The Django for a jazz set led from the drums. He is joined by Mejedi Owusu on trumpet, Caelan Cardello on piano, and Joey Ranieri on bass. The group puts Farnsworth’s quick, exacting rhythmic approach at the center, with trumpet, piano, and bass supplying the quartet’s full working-band conversation. It is a chance to hear a drummer who has long been a presence on the New York jazz scene leading his own small ensemble.
Farnsworth is regarded as one of the scene’s leading jazz drummers, recognized for “blazing speed, precision, musical, and melodic playing.” After moving to New York, he led weekend jazz combos at Augie’s, now Smoke Jazz & Supper Club, and has recorded on more than 100 albums as a leader and sideman. His performing history includes Junior Cook, Cecil Payne, Harold Mabern, Eddie Henderson, Barry Harris, and Curtis Fuller, as well as festival appearances and world tours with Pharaoh Sanders, Horace Silver, McCoy Tyner, Cedar Walton, Diana Krall, Benny Golson, and George Coleman. Reviewing a different Farnsworth quartet performance, Nuvo called the music “unhurried but intensely swinging,” finding that “tradition and vitality coexist on the same bandstand.”
The Django offers a subterranean jazz experience inspired by Parisian boîtes, with vaulted ceilings and exposed brick walls that frame a stage equipped with a state-of-the-art Meyer Sound system. The venue combines two cocktail bars and an open dining area where you can enjoy an elevated menu alongside live performances every night. The evening unfolds with a focus on attentive listening, enhanced by award-winning cocktails crafted by Natasha David and a selection of small plates and dinner options. Shows require a cover charge and reservations are recommended to secure your spot. The setting invites you to settle in for a night of rich jazz sounds, fine food, and carefully mixed drinks, all within the cellar level of the Roxy Hotel, creating a distinct mood that feels both exclusive and welcoming.
