IGOR LUMPERT QUARTET RESISTANCE OF THE EARTH Album Release Show
Nublu 151151 Avenue C, New York 10009
Igor Lumpert brings his quartet to Nublu 151 for the release show of Resistance of the Earth. Lumpert leads on tenor and soprano saxophone, playing his own compositions, with Leo Genovese on piano, Drew Gress on double bass, and Damion Reid on drums. The performance presents the new album in the focused quartet setting heard on the record.
Born in Novo Mesto, Slovenia, Lumpert is a Brooklyn-based tenor saxophonist whose longer-running project, Innertextures, has made five albums as a fluctuating band. His work and study have connected him with Chico Hamilton, Sonny Simmons, John Abercrombie, Billy Harper, Buster Williams, and Robert Glasper; the first Innertextures album included Glasper and Jacob Bro. Resistance of the Earth, released in 2025, considers the planet’s “declining state,” alongside pieces paying tribute to family and “Code Talkers.” JazzTrail called it “a solid, thoughtful statement of originals,” noting the quartet’s rapport and its balance of “intensity and intellect.” Jazzword described the players as “top flight” and the compositions as effective, while hearing debts to John Coltrane and McCoy Tyner.
A second-floor club in the East Village, Nublu 151 is a compact space with a center stage and a balcony that overlooks the performers. The room is dark and grungy with solid acoustics and a disco ball, mostly standing room with a few stools that disappear quickly. The atmosphere is intimate and focused on music, with live sets and DJs spanning jazz, funk, Latin grooves, electronic, and world music. The building's layout supports diverse live performances, and the venue has its own record label. It's a place where musicians gather to play, attracting a crowd of music lovers and creatives. The vibe is laid-back, with a good attitude and openness to different styles going a long way.
