The Greg Ruvolo Big Band Collective

Birdland315 West 44th Street, New York 10036

The Greg Ruvolo Big Band Collective brings a large ensemble to Birdland for a modern big-band set. The program moves between Great American Songbook selections, jazz standards and original compositions, with seasoned New York jazz veterans playing alongside younger musicians. It is music built for the breadth and color of a full band, drawing on the experience of players whose collective résumés include work from SNL and Frank Sinatra to Steely Dan, Ray Charles, and the orchestras of Buddy Rich, Gerry Mulligan, Thad Jones/Mel Lewis and Count Basie.

Trumpeter and arranger Greg Ruvolo leads the Collective. Birdland describes the band as rooted in the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis big-band tradition, with a “swinging, toe-tapping jazz” sound. Ruvolo’s own background includes work with Gil Evans, Airto Moreira, Louis Bellson, New York Voices and the WDR Big Band. The group’s stated approach joins established big-band repertoire with new writing, using the contrast between experienced players and emerging musicians as part of its identity.

Birdland offers a refined jazz experience in a room where the audience sits at tables close to the stage, allowing every note to reach you clearly. The venue features a full menu with dishes like New Orleans-style gumbo alongside a well-stocked bar, making it easy to enjoy a meal or drinks while listening. Each show is ticketed per set, encouraging focused listening as the music unfolds in roughly 45-minute segments. The club’s walls echo decades of jazz history, having hosted legends and continuing to attract top contemporary artists. Located in Manhattan’s Theater District, the space balances a serious music environment with the energy of a night out, where attentive audiences savor the performances without distraction. Booking ahead is essential, as the club fills quickly for its celebrated lineup.
