Who’s Live Today?

Valtinho Anastácio

Zinc Bar82 West 3rd Street, New York 10012

Valtinho Anastácio brings his Sunday evening engagement to Zinc Bar with two sets of Brazilian music. The São Paulo-born percussionist draws on the rhythms and traditions he has pursued since childhood, with a musical vocabulary that includes congas, pandeiro, berimbau, agogô, abê and caixa. His voice is also a central part of his expression, connecting rhythm and melody. Expect a percussion-led program focused on the sounds of Brazil.

Anastácio was born in São Paulo and began making music as a child, inspired by the rhythms of the streets where he grew up. In Brazil, he performed and learned alongside Elis Regina, Wilson Simonal, Djavan, Milton Nascimento and Egberto Gismonti. His career also took him to Tokyo, where he worked with Terumasa Hino, Kazumi Watanabe and Toki Hidefumi, then toured with Ryuichi Sakamoto on the 1994 Sweet Revenge tour. After relocating to New York City, he collaborated with musicians including Victor Bailey, Omar Hakim, Mongo Santamaría, Charlie Palmieri, Eddie Gomez, Kenny Barron, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Astrud Gilberto and McCoy Tyner. A live performance at Nippon Budokan and a collaboration with Jaco Pastorius are among the milestones cited in his career.

Zinc Bar offers a richly textured experience where the past and present of jazz converge in a single, dimly lit room adorned with Art Deco details like velvet upholstery, polished brass, and a Parisian zinc bar. The venue’s layout centers around a close-up stage and a vintage bar, creating a setting where the music is both the focus and a shared journey. Patrons can expect expertly crafted cocktails alongside performances that range from world-class jazz to vibrant Brazilian and African rhythms, often featuring multiple sets and occasional late-night jams. The seating is lounge-style, encouraging attentive listening rather than casual chatter, making it a place to immerse fully in the sound. This is a space where history lingers, once hosting legends like Billie Holiday and Thelonious Monk, now continuing their legacy with a sophisticated yet welcoming vibe.
