Charlie Hunter & Ella Feingold
Blue Note131 West 3rd Street, New York 10012
Charlie Hunter and Ella Feingold bring their exploratory guitar duo to Blue Note for music from Different Strokes for Different Folks. Their set is built as a fluid improvisational conversation, with Hunter’s hybrid guitar supplying bass parts alongside Feingold’s inverted-tuned guitar. Rhythm, space and groove drive music that moves between funk, minimalism, melody and ambient texture.
Feingold is a Grammy-winning guitarist, composer and orchestrator whose work includes performances or recordings with Queen Latifah, Erykah Badu, Bruno Mars and Silk Sonic, The Roots, and Jay-Z. Hunter, a Berkeley-reared guitarist now based in Greensboro, has collaborated with D’Angelo and Kurt Elling. All About Jazz called their record “a deep dialogue speaking fluent funk,” while Jazz Journal praised its “spontaneous conversations” and “idiosyncratic depth of sound.”
Blue Note Jazz Club is a dedicated listening room in the heart of Manhattan's jazz district, where the music is the focus and the space is designed to let the sound fill the room. The club features a stage with a small audience area, and the atmosphere is one of quiet concentration on the music. Shows typically begin at 8:00 PM with a second set at 10:30 PM, and the audience sits on chairs close to the stage. The club has a bar, and drinks are available. The experience is primarily about listening to live jazz, with occasional gospel and soul performances, and the audience often stays to talk and enjoy the music after the sets.
