Zinc Bar82 West 3rd Street, New York 10012
The Sam Dillon / Andrew Gould Quintet brings co-leaders Sam Dillon and Andrew Gould to Zinc Bar for two sets. The billed quintet is led by the two saxophonists, whose 2022 Cellar Live release It Takes One To Know One documents their collaboration. No further personnel or program details are listed, so expect the focus to rest on the dialogue between these established New York players within the five-piece band.
Dillon is a native New Yorker, saxophonist, composer, recording artist and educator, described by Zinc Bar as “one of the most in-demand tenor saxophonists of his generation.” A Juilliard-trained musician, he has worked with the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, Mingus Big Band, Jimmy Heath Big Band and Slide Hampton Octet, and received a GRAMMY Certificate for his participation in the 8-Bit Big Band’s Meta Knight’s Revenge. Gould, a New York City-based alto saxophonist, bandleader and recording artist, has performed or recorded with James Moody, Ron Carter, Wallace Roney, Jon Faddis and the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra. He is also lead alto saxophonist with the GRAMMY-winning 8 Bit Big Band and Dan Pugach Big Band, with credits spanning recordings for screen work and television appearances.
Zinc Bar offers a richly textured experience where the past and present of jazz converge in a single, dimly lit room adorned with Art Deco details like velvet upholstery, polished brass, and a Parisian zinc bar. The venue’s layout centers around a close-up stage and a vintage bar, creating a setting where the music is both the focus and a shared journey. Patrons can expect expertly crafted cocktails alongside performances that range from world-class jazz to vibrant Brazilian and African rhythms, often featuring multiple sets and occasional late-night jams. The seating is lounge-style, encouraging attentive listening rather than casual chatter, making it a place to immerse fully in the sound. This is a space where history lingers, once hosting legends like Billie Holiday and Thelonious Monk, now continuing their legacy with a sophisticated yet welcoming vibe.
