The Longest Johns
Sony Hall235 West 46th Street, New York 10036
The Longest Johns bring their three-person lineup to Sony Hall: Jonathan “JD” Darley, Andy Yates and Robbie Sattin. The Bristol group’s live work draws on traditional folk songs and shanties, while also making room for less conventional material and original songs. Their calling card is close vocal harmony, with maritime repertoire given a robust, communal charge rather than treated as museum-piece folk.
Formed in Bristol, England, The Longest Johns describe themselves as an a cappella folk music band. They became widely known through their rendition of “Wellerman,” which went viral on TikTok in 2021 and helped ignite the ShantyTok wave. Alongside older songs, they write originals and have collaborated with Spanish folk group El Pony Pisador on The Longest Pony. Their recordings have also used instruments including banjo, guitars, mandolins, organ, harmonica, percussion, double bass, fiddle and melodeon. Critics have called them “a formidable vocal force” and praised their “gutsy close-harmonised a cappella”; a Bristol247 live review found “uncontrolled joy,” mass singalongs and “a punk spirit” in their performance.
