The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, under music director Chris Crenshaw, brings its sixth season of Journey Through Jazz to the Great American Songbook. This performance-led, narrative concert explores the fundamentals of jazz through classic American popular songs from the golden age of song, in iconic arrangements and new perspectives on the repertoire. Rising-star guest vocalists join the orchestra, though the guests have not been announced. It is part of the Lynne and Richard Pasculano Jazz Series.
New York’s resident Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra has been based at the institution since 1988. The 15-member jazz orchestra is known for a repertoire spanning the work of Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Thelonious Monk and Charles Mingus, as well as commissioned music and new arrangements. Its musicians are described by Jazz at Lincoln Center as virtuoso instrumentalists, soloists, composers, arrangers and educators. The ensemble has collaborated with the New York Philharmonic, Berlin Philharmonic, and the Boston, Chicago and London symphony orchestras, while guest artists have included Kurt Elling and Shenel Johns. Reviewing the group, The Guardian heard a “graceful blend of swing grooves” and ensemble playing delivered with “languid rigour.”
