Yvonne Rogers Quartet

The Jazz Gallery1160 Broadway, New York 10001

Yvonne Rogers brings her quartet to The Jazz Gallery for a set led from the piano, with Rogers also credited for compositions. A separate calendar listing for this date names Stéphane Clément on trumpet, Henry Fraser on bass, and Jonas Esser on drums. The billed quartet has worked in different lineups elsewhere, but this performance is presented as Rogers’s four-piece group.

Originally from Penobscot, Maine and now based in Brooklyn, Rogers is a pianist, composer, and improviser whose music is rooted in improvisation and play. Her 2023 debut album, Seeds, arrived on Relative Pitch Records. She also performs with Ingrid Laubrock’s Lilith, Adam O’Farrill’s Elephant, and Alden Hellmuth’s Good Intentions, and was a 2024 Next Jazz Legacy Awardee. Paul Acquaro called her a “Fresh, new voice on piano,” while Thierry De Clemensat described her as a “singular voice in contemporary music.” Terence Collie heard a sound that is “beautifully controlled yet entirely free in spirit.”

The Jazz Gallery offers a focused listening room experience on the fifth floor of a Midtown office building, where the audience gathers to hear progressive jazz performed by emerging and established artists. The space is designed to highlight the music without distractions: seating is arranged to bring listeners close to the performers, fostering a direct connection with the sound. There is no food service, but a bar is available, and ticket prices are modest, encouraging accessibility. Shows typically run from 7 to 11 pm on select nights, featuring multiple sets that invite deep engagement rather than casual socializing. The venue’s commitment to artistic growth is evident in its support for new compositions and collaborations, making an evening here a chance to witness jazz as a living, evolving art form in a setting that respects both the musicians and the audience.
