Bossa Swings: Jobim and Getz Centennial brings saxophonist Julian Lee’s quartet together with guest vocalist Mar Vilaseca for a program honoring the musical connection between Antônio Carlos Jobim and Stan Getz. Lee plays tenor saxophone alongside Vilaseca, pianist Caelen Cardello, bassist Russell Hall, and drummer Matt Lee. The set moves through Brazilian bossa nova and modern jazz, with the evening framed around Jobim and Getz’s lush melodies, rhythmic pull, and the interplay between voice, tenor, and quartet.
Lee is a regular member of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and a 2017 Lincoln Center Emerging Artist Award recipient. Dizzy’s has called him “one of the most exciting and versatile saxophonists of his generation.” His credits include performances with Wynton Marsalis, Christian McBride, Herlin Riley, Jon Batiste, and the Mingus Big Band. Vilaseca was born in Barcelona and is pursuing her career in the United States. A vocalist, composer, and multi-instrumentalist, she is described by Jazz at Lincoln Center as bringing “the soul of Brazilian music to life.”
