GIANCARLO VULCANO's RADIO HOUR

Barbès376 9th St, New York 11215

Giancarlo Vulcano brings his Radio Hour to Barbès as a solo performance built around music composed and played live, with Vulcano reading over it. The show reimagines the narrative radio hour through old and new pieces, interweaving found texts, news stories, essays and literary works. Rather than a conventional band set, the evening centers the shifting relationship between spoken material and live composition: words discovered in public life and literature meet music made in the room.

Vulcano is a Brooklyn composer whose work has included a frequent collaboration with producer Hal Willner, rooted in a shared passion for the music of Nino Rota. He contributed arrangements and conducted the orchestra for Willner and Rota concerts at the Barbican, the Venice Biennale, Lincoln Center and The Stone. That background in arranging, conducting and composer-led performance gives Radio Hour a context beyond a reading with accompaniment: it is a live framework in which texts and music are placed in conversation, with the material and its sequencing doing the narrative work. Barbès offers a compact, warmly worn space where the music feels immediate and close, with a long wooden bar and a back room under a scarlet ceiling that hosts nightly performances. The venue champions a broad spectrum of global sounds, from Balkan brass and klezmer to Afrobeat and experimental jazz, often featuring residencies like the Slavic Soul Party. The audience gathers around small tables or at the bar, sharing drinks crafted with a nod to French spirits, while the music invites attentive listening rather than loud conversation. Shows usually have a suggested donation instead of a cover charge, creating a welcoming environment where the focus is on the artists. The venue’s commitment to accessibility and its role in Brooklyn’s cultural fabric make it a distinctive spot for an evening of richly diverse live music.
