Mamady Kouyate's MANDINGO AMBASSADORS

Barbès376 9th St, New York 11215

Mamady Kouyate brings his Mandingo Ambassadors to Barbès for the group’s regular Wednesday night set. Led by Kouyate, the band is his vehicle for music rooted in the classic 1970s sound of Guinea’s Sylliphone recordings. This is a recurring appearance by the guitarist and his ensemble, rather than a one-off bill or special presentation.

Kouyate is a Guinean guitarist and heir to a long line of griots. His father, among the first Guinean griots to introduce guitar, taught him and specialized in adapting traditional kora and balafon lines for the instrument. Kouyate first made his mark as an electric guitarist in national bands during President Sékou Touré’s Authenticité campaign, then spent years touring with Bembeya Jazz, Guinea’s best-known musical export. He relocated to the United States in the early 2000s and founded the Mandingo Ambassadors. Ben Ratliff of The New York Times praised the music’s “dazzling vocal and guitar patterns over a rhythm section that is like a perfect system.”

Barbès offers a compact, warmly worn space where the music feels immediate and close, with a long wooden bar and a back room under a scarlet ceiling that hosts nightly performances. The venue champions a broad spectrum of global sounds, from Balkan brass and klezmer to Afrobeat and experimental jazz, often featuring residencies like the Slavic Soul Party. The audience gathers around small tables or at the bar, sharing drinks crafted with a nod to French spirits, while the music invites attentive listening rather than loud conversation. Shows usually have a suggested donation instead of a cover charge, creating a welcoming environment where the focus is on the artists. The venue’s commitment to accessibility and its role in Brooklyn’s cultural fabric make it a distinctive spot for an evening of richly diverse live music.
