Valtinho Anastácio

Zinc Bar82 West 3rd Street, New York 10012

Valtinho Anastácio brings a Sunday-night program of Brazilian sounds to Zinc Bar. The São Paulo-born percussionist and vocalist is billed solo, with no additional performers listed, for the later of the evening’s two sets. Expect a rhythm-led performance shaped by Brazilian musical traditions, with Anastácio’s voice also part of the musical picture.

Anastácio began making music as a child in São Paulo, inspired by the rhythms around him, and went on to master congas, pandeiro, berimbau, agogô, abê, caixa, and other percussion. His career has included performing and learning alongside Elis Regina, Wilson Simonal, Djavan, Milton Nascimento, and Egberto Gismonti. In Tokyo, he worked with Terumasa Hino, Kazumi Watanabe, and Toki Hidefumi, then toured with Ryuichi Sakamoto on the 1994 Sweet Revenge tour. He has also appeared at Nippon Budokan and collaborated with Jaco Pastorius. After relocating to New York City, he worked with Victor Bailey, Omar Hakim, Mongo Santamaría, Charlie Palmieri, Eddie Gomez, Kenny Barron, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Astrud Gilberto, and McCoy Tyner.

Zinc Bar offers a richly textured experience where the past and present of jazz converge in a single, dimly lit room adorned with Art Deco details like velvet upholstery, polished brass, and a Parisian zinc bar. The venue’s layout centers around a close-up stage and a vintage bar, creating a setting where the music is both the focus and a shared journey. Patrons can expect expertly crafted cocktails alongside performances that range from world-class jazz to vibrant Brazilian and African rhythms, often featuring multiple sets and occasional late-night jams. The seating is lounge-style, encouraging attentive listening rather than casual chatter, making it a place to immerse fully in the sound. This is a space where history lingers, once hosting legends like Billie Holiday and Thelonious Monk, now continuing their legacy with a sophisticated yet welcoming vibe.
