RED BARAAT
Barbès376 9th St, New York 11215
Red Baraat comes to Barbès for a late-night full-band set. Conceived by dhol player Sunny Jain, the Brooklyn group brings its signature meeting point of hard-driving North Indian bhangra, hip-hop, jazz and raw punk energy. The show follows the release of the band’s 2025 album Bhangra Rangeela, issued by Sinj Records, and puts a hometown band back in a room built for close-range live performance.
Red Baraat is a pioneering Brooklyn band whose sound has drawn worldwide praise for its singular blend of bhangra and other musical languages. The group was formed with a stated aim of manifesting joy and unity, and its performances carry that purpose openly. Their 2017 NPR Tiny Desk Concert was named the eighth best Tiny Desk performance of all time by New York Magazine. The newer Bhangra Rangeela is presented as further evidence of the band’s continuing vitality, while the combination of North Indian rhythmic drive, hip-hop, jazz and punk remains central to what Red Baraat does.
Barbès offers a compact, warmly worn space where the music feels immediate and close, with a long wooden bar and a back room under a scarlet ceiling that hosts nightly performances. The venue champions a broad spectrum of global sounds, from Balkan brass and klezmer to Afrobeat and experimental jazz, often featuring residencies like the Slavic Soul Party. The audience gathers around small tables or at the bar, sharing drinks crafted with a nod to French spirits, while the music invites attentive listening rather than loud conversation. Shows usually have a suggested donation instead of a cover charge, creating a welcoming environment where the focus is on the artists. The venue’s commitment to accessibility and its role in Brooklyn’s cultural fabric make it a distinctive spot for an evening of richly diverse live music.
