Who’s Live Today?

David Ostwald's Louis Armstrong Eternity Band

Birdland315 West 44th Street, New York 10036

David Ostwald’s Louis Armstrong Eternity Band brings its long-running Birdland residency to the early evening with a rotating lineup of New York hot-jazz players led by Ostwald on tuba. The set draws on the work of Louis Armstrong, Bix Beiderbecke, Duke Ellington, Jelly Roll Morton and their contemporaries, giving the music of the 1920s and 30s a live, swinging reading. The band is now in its 21st year as a weekly Birdland engagement.

The New York-based ensemble is led by Ostwald, who was raised in Swarthmore, Pennsylvania. Its personnel vary, but documented lineups have included tuba, trombone, clarinet or alto sax, drums, trumpet and piano, with some performances adding banjo and tenor guitar. The group has welcomed guests including Wynton Marsalis, Dick Hyman, Jon Hendricks, Clark Terry, Jon Faddis, Joe Wilder and Benny Waters, and a recording with Big Joe Turner was Grammy-nominated. Time Out called the band “fabulous” and “about as good as it gets”; other reviewers have noted its “playful and skilled” musicians, “deep respect for the material,” and a “boisterous” tribute played by a “crackerjack” band.

Birdland offers a refined jazz experience in a room where the audience sits at tables close to the stage, allowing every note to reach you clearly. The venue features a full menu with dishes like New Orleans-style gumbo alongside a well-stocked bar, making it easy to enjoy a meal or drinks while listening. Each show is ticketed per set, encouraging focused listening as the music unfolds in roughly 45-minute segments. The club’s walls echo decades of jazz history, having hosted legends and continuing to attract top contemporary artists. Located in Manhattan’s Theater District, the space balances a serious music environment with the energy of a night out, where attentive audiences savor the performances without distraction. Booking ahead is essential, as the club fills quickly for its celebrated lineup.
