Joie Bianco Trio

Birdland315 West 44th Street, New York 10036

Joie Bianco brings her trio to Birdland for an early-evening vocal jazz set. The billing confirms the trio format but does not name the accompanying musicians, so this is a chance to hear Bianco’s voice and arranging in a small-group setting rather than assume a specific lineup. Her regular vocal project, The Sunhouse Singers, is a separate trio with Kate Kortum and June Cavlan, but the available information does not establish that it is the group appearing tonight.

Bianco is a Staten Island native, jazz singer, teacher, and arranger whose influences range from Nat King Cole and Roy Eldridge to Sister Rosetta Tharpe and James Brown. A University of Miami Frost School of Music graduate, she has collaborated with Marilyn Maye, Jane Monheit, Cyrille Aimée, Joey Calderazzo, Emmet Cohen, Bryan Carter, Peter Bernstein, and Benny Benack III. Her work has taken her to Jazz at Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, Birdland, and The Django, as well as venues across Texas. She won the 2019 YoungArts award in jazz vocals and the 2023 DownBeat Student Music Award for Best Solo Jazz Vocalist. Stephen Holden of The New York Times called her a “prodigious discovery,” while a BroadwayWorld reviewer praised her “lithe vocal gymnastics and power” and the “vulnerability and craft” in her songwriting.

Birdland offers a refined jazz experience in a room where the audience sits at tables close to the stage, allowing every note to reach you clearly. The venue features a full menu with dishes like New Orleans-style gumbo alongside a well-stocked bar, making it easy to enjoy a meal or drinks while listening. Each show is ticketed per set, encouraging focused listening as the music unfolds in roughly 45-minute segments. The club’s walls echo decades of jazz history, having hosted legends and continuing to attract top contemporary artists. Located in Manhattan’s Theater District, the space balances a serious music environment with the energy of a night out, where attentive audiences savor the performances without distraction. Booking ahead is essential, as the club fills quickly for its celebrated lineup.
