Etienne Charles: Creole Christmas
The Pocket130 West 46th Street, New York 10036
Etienne Charles brings Creole Christmas to The Pocket for a holiday set that recasts seasonal music through the island and Down South cultures of his roots. The Trinidad-born trumpeter, composer and storyteller draws on the sounds he has pursued across the Caribbean and the wider diaspora, giving familiar holiday material a perspective shaped by Creole traditions and his own research-led musical practice.
Charles is known for a lush trumpet sound, varied compositional textures and pulsating percussion-driven grooves. A 2015 Guggenheim Fellow and 2022 Creative Capital Awardee, he travels to the regions that inform his work, meeting musicians and cultural leaders and taking part in rituals as he studies their traditions. His compositions connect the African diaspora to the regions at the roots of migration, often foregrounding marginalized communities and addressing subjects that can be difficult or controversial. This holiday program places that ongoing search for stories and sounds in direct conversation with the season’s classic repertoire.
The Pocket offers a close-up encounter with world-class jazz musicians in a small, focused setting where every note feels immediate and unfiltered. The room is designed to bring listeners near the performers, creating a direct connection that makes the music feel personal and vivid. Seating is limited and arranged to emphasize attentive listening rather than casual socializing, with a bar available to complement the experience. Shows are ticketed, encouraging an audience that is there to fully engage with the performance. The venue’s location in Manhattan places it within easy reach of the city’s vibrant cultural pulse, making it a perfect spot for an evening dedicated to serious jazz appreciation without distractions.
