Champian Fulton Quartet
The Django2 6th Avenue, New York 10013
Champian Fulton brings her quartet to The Django for a late-night set led from the piano, with Fulton also singing. Alto saxophonist Klas Lindquist, bassist Hide Tanaka and drummer Fukushi Tainaka complete the group. The program is billed simply as the Champian Fulton Quartet, placing the focus on a working jazz band built around her piano, voice and swinging approach.
New York City-based Fulton is a jazz pianist and singer born in Norman, Oklahoma. With 12 albums to her credit, she has been recognized in the Hot House Magazine Readers Poll as both Pianist and Vocalist of 2019. She grew up learning from Clark Terry, Joe Williams and Red Holloway, and has recorded with saxophonist Scott Hamilton. The Django calls her a “guardian of the legacy of jazz,” citing the “distinction and sophistication” of her piano and voice. The New Yorker has described her presence as “galvanizing,” while The New York Times called her “a charming young steward of the mainstream jazz tradition.”
The Django offers a subterranean jazz experience inspired by Parisian boîtes, with vaulted ceilings and exposed brick walls that frame a stage equipped with a state-of-the-art Meyer Sound system. The venue combines two cocktail bars and an open dining area where you can enjoy an elevated menu alongside live performances every night. The evening unfolds with a focus on attentive listening, enhanced by award-winning cocktails crafted by Natasha David and a selection of small plates and dinner options. Shows require a cover charge and reservations are recommended to secure your spot. The setting invites you to settle in for a night of rich jazz sounds, fine food, and carefully mixed drinks, all within the cellar level of the Roxy Hotel, creating a distinct mood that feels both exclusive and welcoming.
