Etienne Charles: Creole Christmas

The Pocket130 West 46th Street, New York 10036

Etienne Charles brings Creole Christmas to The Pocket for a holiday celebration that places classic seasonal music in the island and Southern cultures of his roots. The Trinidad-born trumpeter, composer and storyteller is billed alone, with no ensemble or guest lineup specified for this date. The program draws on the sounds that shape his work: lush trumpet lines, varied compositional textures and pulsating percussion, recasting familiar holiday material through a Creole perspective.

Charles builds compositions through research, traveling to the regions he explores, meeting musicians and cultural leaders, and taking part in rituals. His work connects the African diaspora and centers communities that have been marginalized. He has performed with or arranged for Roberta Flack, Marcus Miller, the Count Basie Orchestra, Monty Alexander, Gregory Porter and René Marie, among others. He is also known for Creole Soul and orchestral writing. Reviewing his Creole Orchestra, The Guardian praised his “impeccable command”; JazzTimes called him “a daring improviser who delivers with heart wrenching lyricism.” WBGO described A Creole Christmas as “a brilliant musical meld” of hymns, Venezuelan parangs and island calypsos.

The Pocket offers a close-up encounter with world-class jazz musicians in a small, focused setting where every note feels immediate and unfiltered. The room is designed to bring listeners near the performers, creating a direct connection that makes the music feel personal and vivid. Seating is limited and arranged to emphasize attentive listening rather than casual socializing, with a bar available to complement the experience. Shows are ticketed, encouraging an audience that is there to fully engage with the performance. The venue’s location in Manhattan places it within easy reach of the city’s vibrant cultural pulse, making it a perfect spot for an evening dedicated to serious jazz appreciation without distractions.
