Malaya Sol Quintet 'Madura' Album Debut
The Django2 6th Avenue, New York 10013
Malaya Sol brings her quintet to The Django for the debut of Madura. The vocalist is joined by Itai Kriss on flute, Leandro Pellegrino on guitar, Eduardo Belo on bass, and Alex Kautz on drums. The program centers Sol’s approach to boleros and sambas, with the flute, guitar, bass, and drums giving those song forms a full small-group setting. This is an album-debut performance rather than a standard stand-alone set, making it a chance to hear the project framed by the musicians named on the bill.
Born in Zambales, Philippines, and now based in Brooklyn, Sol describes her music as a blend of “World Music, Jazz, and Soul,” shaped by travel and performance across cultures. The Django says she “breathes fresh life to Boleros and Sambas,” a useful guide to the repertoire at this show. Writing for AXS.com, Allen Foster called her work “an incredible excursion that traveled both around the globe and through time,” and praised a tone he described as “a divine gossamer spun from opulent gold fibers.”
The Django offers a subterranean jazz experience inspired by Parisian boîtes, with vaulted ceilings and exposed brick walls that frame a stage equipped with a state-of-the-art Meyer Sound system. The venue combines two cocktail bars and an open dining area where you can enjoy an elevated menu alongside live performances every night. The evening unfolds with a focus on attentive listening, enhanced by award-winning cocktails crafted by Natasha David and a selection of small plates and dinner options. Shows require a cover charge and reservations are recommended to secure your spot. The setting invites you to settle in for a night of rich jazz sounds, fine food, and carefully mixed drinks, all within the cellar level of the Roxy Hotel, creating a distinct mood that feels both exclusive and welcoming.
