Who’s Live Today?

Basia Bulat

Joe's Pub425 Lafayette Street, New York 10003

Basia Bulat comes to Joe’s Pub for a solo set that reimagines songs from Basia’s Palace alongside highlights from across her catalogue. The Montreal-based singer-songwriter will bring the deeply expressive, multi-instrumental approach for which she is known to the room, with songs that connect gospel, soul and classic folk. This is a chance to hear her material stripped to a one-person performance, with the focus on her distinctive voice and songbook.

Bulat’s recordings have long drawn on autoharp-accompanied songwriting, as well as a love of classic folk, country and R&B. Her album Are You in Love? was produced by Jim James of My Morning Jacket and included two songs co-written with Meg Remy of U.S. Girls; frequent collaborator Mark Lawson co-produced Basia’s Palace. She has shared stages with The National, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Daniel Lanois, St. Vincent, Sufjan Stevens and Destroyer. Critics have called her “a 21st century indie folker with a heart full of mid-century soul”; Montreal Rocks praised a voice “sweet without being cloying, vulnerable without seeming fragile,” while Drowned in Sound noted its “tremulant quiver.”

The stage is set in a converted library space with a striped bar and photos of legends like Leonard Cohen and Amy Winehouse lining the walls. You'll find yourself seated on velvet couches or at candle-lit tables, close enough to hear every note from the back. The sound, engineered by technicians who've worked with John Legend and The Notorious B.I.G., is consistently ranked among the best in New York. Three shows a day, dinner and drinks served throughout, and a menu ranging from Italian small plates to craft cocktails; it's a place where music and conversation flow together, and where both rising stars and legends have made their U.S. debuts.
