NYE 2027: Chris Potter Quartet
Village Vanguard178 7th Avenue South, New York 10014
Chris Potter brings his quartet to the Village Vanguard for a New Year’s Eve 2027 performance. The billed format is a quartet, though the musicians joining Potter for this date have not been confirmed. It is a fitting return to a room central to his recorded history: Potter’s Got the Keys to the Kingdom: Live at the Village Vanguard captured an earlier quartet there. Expect the focus to be on the group’s collective playing rather than a prescribed lineup or special guest announcement.
New York-based saxophonist, composer and bandleader Chris Potter is described by his Bandcamp as “one of the most influential and inventive improvisors of his generation.” Across his career, he has worked or recorded with Herbie Hancock, Dave Holland, John Scofield, the Mingus Big Band, Jim Hall, Paul Motian, Dave Douglas and Ray Brown, and appeared on Steely Dan’s Grammy-winning Two Against Nature. Reviews emphasize both his command and his listening: JazzTimes calls him a “gutsy player” with “huge ears,” while Jazz Weekly hears playing that is “big and beefy.” Writing about past work, Glide called the quartet “elite” and said it reaches “spiritual peaks.”
A narrow basement staircase leads to a triangular room with a red curtain and a stage at the point, where musicians play for a small audience of 123. Tables open like spokes from the stage, and the walls hold portraits of jazz legends. The acoustics are excellent, and the only sound before the music begins is the hum of the room. No food is served, only drinks at a bar. Shows start at 8:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m., with seating beginning at 7:00 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. respectively. The atmosphere is focused entirely on the music, with silence requested before the concert begins.
