Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks
Birdland315 West 44th Street, New York 10036
Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks bring Giordano’s Birdland Theater residency to the room with an 11-piece band. Led by the GRAMMY Award-winning New York native and multi-instrumentalist, the group recreates the sounds of jazz from the 1920s onward, drawing on the arrangements, ensemble colors, and rhythmic drive of the period. This is a full orchestra set from a band whose work is built around making early jazz repertoire sound lived-in rather than museum-bound.
New York City-based Giordano and the Nighthawks are champions of hot jazz from the 1920s and 30s, and their period expertise has made them a regular presence in film and television. Their credits include The Cotton Club, The Aviator, Finding Forrester, Revolutionary Road, Café Society, Boardwalk Empire, and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. The augmented Nighthawks also appeared on-screen and on the soundtrack for Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon. Giordano is known as a bass instrumentalist specializing in this era’s music, while reviewers have singled out the band’s saxes and brass alongside his tuba and bass work. The New York Times called the group’s vintage swing “an erupting sense of euphoria.”
