Lauren Sevian Quartet
The Django2 6th Avenue, New York 10013
Lauren Sevian brings her quartet, LSQ, to The Django for a late-night set led by her baritone saxophone. The group’s documented lineup pairs baritone with piano, bass and drums, drawing on classic jazz standards alongside original tunes. Expect the “big baritone energy” the venue associates with Sevian’s band, in a focused small-group setting.
A Grammy and DownBeat “Rising Star” award winner, Sevian moved to New York in 1997 to study at the Manhattan School of Music. She has toured with Diva and the Artie Shaw Orchestra, leads LSQ around New York, and co-leads the quintet LSAT with alto saxophonist Alexa Tarantino, whose win in the 2018 “Made in NY” jazz competition is part of her story. A regular with the Mingus Big Band, Sevian has also performed with the Dizzy Gillespie All Star Big Band, Christian McBride’s Big Band, Robin Eubanks Big Band and the Count Basie Orchestra. All About Jazz calls her sound “full and authoritative” and notes the “graceful precision” of her original compositions; Bob Bernotas heard her debut Blueprint as “further proof that she is becoming an important voice on her instrument.”
The Django offers a subterranean jazz experience inspired by Parisian boîtes, with vaulted ceilings and exposed brick walls that frame a stage equipped with a state-of-the-art Meyer Sound system. The venue combines two cocktail bars and an open dining area where you can enjoy an elevated menu alongside live performances every night. The evening unfolds with a focus on attentive listening, enhanced by award-winning cocktails crafted by Natasha David and a selection of small plates and dinner options. Shows require a cover charge and reservations are recommended to secure your spot. The setting invites you to settle in for a night of rich jazz sounds, fine food, and carefully mixed drinks, all within the cellar level of the Roxy Hotel, creating a distinct mood that feels both exclusive and welcoming.
