Juan Chiavassa Trio
Juan Chiavassa (d), David Kikoski (p), Boris Kozlov (b)
Ornithology6 Suydam Street, New York 11221
At Ornithology, drummer Juan Chiavassa leads a piano trio with David Kikoski on piano and Boris Kozlov on bass. The group works in the acoustic, classic piano-trio format, playing straight-ahead modern jazz. Their appearance brings together three musicians in a format central to Chiavassa’s recorded project Three on Three, rooted in his deep regard for the jazz tradition of his adopted New York home.
Chiavassa is from Venado Tuerto, Argentina, and is now based in New York City. His trio with Kikoski and Kozlov reflects his admiration for drummer Roy Haynes, whom Chiavassa calls his favorite drummer; both Kikoski and Kozlov played in Haynes’s trio. Chiavassa selected Kikoski, described as acclaimed, and his long-time associate Kozlov, a Grammy winner, for Three on Three. Beyond this group, Chiavassa has continued to work with Mike Stern’s band and produced Julieta Rada’s Candombe. Jazzwise called the trio’s music “a driving set of acoustic modern jazz,” highlighting its “deep swing, virtuosity and interplay.”
Ornithology Jazz Club offers a focused jazz experience centered around a striking Bechstein Grand Piano, inviting guests into a space where the music and cocktails share equal importance. The room is compact, allowing the audience to sit close to the performers and catch every nuance of the live sets, which often extend into the late night. The venue features a well-curated cocktail menu that complements the music, making it a place to savor both sound and flavor. The setting encourages attentive listening rather than casual conversation, creating a shared moment of musical immersion. With its location in Bushwick, Brooklyn, the club blends a creative, bohemian spirit with a dedication to jazz tradition, making an evening here feel like a personal journey into the heart of the music.
