Ray Gallon Trio LIVE at Roxy Bar
Roxy Bar2 Avenue of the Americas, New York 10013
Ray Gallon brings his trio to Roxy Bar for an afternoon set led by the New York pianist. The billed format is a piano trio, though the musicians joining Gallon for this date are not specified. Expect Gallon’s own blend of bebop and blues, shaped by an expressive, swinging approach that draws old and new ideas into the same conversation.
An NYC native, Gallon has been a fixture of the jazz scene for more than three decades. Early mentors included John Lewis, Hank Jones and Jaki Byard, and his work has taken him into touring or recording settings with Ron Carter, Lionel Hampton, Art Farmer, George Adams, Les Paul and Wycliffe Gordon. He has accompanied singers including Jon Hendricks, Sheila Jordan and Chaka Khan, and appeared at the White House and Kennedy Center alongside Dizzy Gillespie, Milt Jackson, Sweets Edison and Joe Williams. His trio record Make Your Move, recorded with David Wong and Kenny Washington, drew praise for Gallon’s playful Monk-like touch, fleet playing and ballad work; the review called the trio’s backing “sensitive support.” Gallon is also a Lecturer of Jazz Studies at City College of New York.
