HARISH RAGHAVAN
Close Up154 Orchard St, New York 10002
Harish Raghavan brings his bass-led work to Close Up for the night's late set. The Chicago-born, New York-based bassist-composer is billed without additional performers, in a program that places a bandleader and composer whose work moves among musical lineages at the fore. The evening is part of a two-set engagement, with this performance following an earlier set.
For more than a decade, Raghavan has been a foundational presence among a generation of artists. A Thelonious Monk Competition semifinalist, he has been described as a “sound architect” for original projects by Ambrose Akinmusire and Eric Harland, while his long-running collaborations also include Logan Richardson, Vijay Iyer, Gerald Clayton, Taylor Eigsti and Walter Smith III. He began on mridanga before moving to bass at 16, then studied at USC with John Clayton and Dave Carpenter, later working with Robert Hurst. His debut, Calls for Action, gathers 15 original pieces into a connected narrative and reflects his development as both composer and bandleader. Alongside performing internationally, he has taught at the Stanford Jazz Workshop, The New School, Siena Jazz Workshop, Banff and Centrum Jazz Workshop.
Close Up offers a focused jazz experience in a sleek, minimalist space on Manhattan's Lower East Side, where the sound system and acoustics bring every note into sharp relief. The venue features a small back room that invites close connection with the performers, creating a setting where music is the main event and distractions are minimal. Shows run six nights a week with multiple sets, encouraging a deep dive into the music rather than a casual night out. A bar serves Latin American-inspired bites and cocktails, complementing the listening experience without overwhelming it. The crowd tends to be attentive, drawn by the artist-driven programming that blends classic jazz traditions with fresh, innovative sounds. This is a place to settle in, listen closely, and savor the evolving jazz scene in a refined yet approachable environment.
