Simon Moullier brings the premiere of his 2026 Residency Commission project to The Jazz Gallery on December 4. The bill names Moullier without an accompanying formation, so the personnel beyond him have not been announced. The appearance follows the release of his newest album, Ceiba, and marks the first of two nights at the gallery devoted to the new commission.
Born in Nantes, France, Moullier is a vibraphonist, composer, arranger, producer and bandleader whose work is noted for an “entirely new approach and sound” on the instrument. He arranged music for Terri Lyne Carrington’s Grammy-winning New Standards Vol. 1 and has shared stages with Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Jimmy Heath and Gerald Clayton; his recorded collaborators include Mark Turner, Kendrick Scott, Miguel Zenón and Dayna Stephens. DownBeat has called him the “unchallenged new star of jazz vibraphone.” Herbie Hancock says, “His music is fresh, it speaks to everyone. Never heard anyone play vibes like that before,” while Joshua Redman praises his “melody, feel and flow” and adds, “what a sound!”
The Jazz Gallery offers a focused listening room experience on the fifth floor of a Midtown office building, where the audience gathers to hear progressive jazz performed by emerging and established artists. The space is designed to highlight the music without distractions: seating is arranged to bring listeners close to the performers, fostering a direct connection with the sound. There is no food service, but a bar is available, and ticket prices are modest, encouraging accessibility. Shows typically run from 7 to 11 pm on select nights, featuring multiple sets that invite deep engagement rather than casual socializing. The venue’s commitment to artistic growth is evident in its support for new compositions and collaborations, making an evening here a chance to witness jazz as a living, evolving art form in a setting that respects both the musicians and the audience.
