NYE 2027: Chris Potter Quartet

Village Vanguard178 7th Avenue South, New York 10014

Chris Potter brings a quartet to the Village Vanguard for a late New Year’s Eve set. The billed group is the Chris Potter Quartet; no individual lineup has been announced, so the musicians joining Potter for this performance are not specified. It is a midnight-season performance in the Vanguard’s triangular basement room, where the audience gathers close to the stage and the room’s attention is reserved for the music.

A South Carolinian saxophonist and composer, Potter is known for virtuosic, inventive contemporary jazz. His quartets have taken different forms over the years, with past collaborators including pianists David Virelles, Craig Taborn and Kevin Hays, bassists Joe Martin and Scott Colley, and drummers Marcus Gilmore and Bill Stewart. He has also worked with Herbie Hancock, Pat Metheny, Jim Hall, Paul Motian, Ray Brown, John Scofield and Dave Douglas. NPR called his playing “bright-toned and gymnastically powerful,” while JazzTimes praised his “gutsy” approach and “huge chops.” Reviewing one quartet performance, London Jazz News wrote: “To play more impressively, more coherently or better … it really can’t be done.”

A narrow basement staircase leads to a triangular room with a red curtain and a stage at the point, where musicians play for a small audience of 123. Tables open like spokes from the stage, and the walls hold portraits of jazz legends. The acoustics are excellent, and the only sound before the music begins is the hum of the room. No food is served, only drinks at a bar. Shows start at 8:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m., with seating beginning at 7:00 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. respectively. The atmosphere is focused entirely on the music, with silence requested before the concert begins.
