ELIANA FISHBEYN
Close Up154 Orchard St, New York 10002
Eliana Fishbeyn brings her live-electronics project to Close Up for two sets. A composer, performer and educator, Fishbeyn performs on an electronic instrument she has spent the past two years coding and building. Its design draws on Butch Morris’s Conduction, Ramona Andra Langley’s Crash Music and other digital-age folk works. The music is presented as a solo live-electronics set, with Fishbeyn’s evolving instrument at its core.
Fishbeyn comes from Chapel Hill, North Carolina. She first brought this instrument to New York in late 2025, performing in an experimental ensemble led by Joel Ross at the Jazz Gallery, and has continued exploring it with Samantha Kochis, Aaron Rubinstein and Nick Jozwiak. As a pianist, she has also performed and recorded in duo settings with Nicola Caminiti and Alex Hitchcock. Her work grows from a desire for chaos and art that can “defy logic” while holding “multiple realities simultaneously.” The results often take the form of constantly morphing soundscapes, moving through nostalgia, romanticism, noise and uncertainty.
Close Up offers a focused jazz experience in a sleek, minimalist space on Manhattan's Lower East Side, where the sound system and acoustics bring every note into sharp relief. The venue features a small back room that invites close connection with the performers, creating a setting where music is the main event and distractions are minimal. Shows run six nights a week with multiple sets, encouraging a deep dive into the music rather than a casual night out. A bar serves Latin American-inspired bites and cocktails, complementing the listening experience without overwhelming it. The crowd tends to be attentive, drawn by the artist-driven programming that blends classic jazz traditions with fresh, innovative sounds. This is a place to settle in, listen closely, and savor the evolving jazz scene in a refined yet approachable environment.
