Bill Charlap Solo Piano

Dizzy's Club102 Columbus Circle, New York 10107

Bill Charlap comes to Dizzy’s Club for a solo-piano set, presenting the pianist without his usual trio. The program is billed simply as Bill Charlap Solo Piano, with the focus on his approach to songs and his “effortless swing and deep musical connection,” as the venue puts it. This performance falls within a five-night run at the club, from November 18 through 22.

New York-born and Grammy-winning, Charlap is known for interpretations of American popular song and the Songbook. His official biography says that, however “imaginative or surprising” his approach may be, he “invariably zeroes in on [a song’s] essence.” Over his career he has performed with Tony Bennett, Phil Woods, Gerry Mulligan, Wynton Marsalis and Houston Person, among others. His long-running trio with bassist Peter Washington and drummer Kenny Washington is a separate project from this solo appearance. Reviewers have noted Charlap’s “range within a standard” and the “grace, inspiration, and skill” of his playing; The Guardian has called his readings of familiar standards “fresh but pertinent.”

Dizzy's Club offers a refined jazz experience with a seating capacity of about 140, where guests enjoy live performances from world-class musicians in a room that frames sweeping views of Central Park and the Manhattan skyline. The venue features a full bar and a seasonal menu with sophisticated soul food, enhancing the evening beyond just the music. Shows are ticketed and typically run two sets per night, with late-night sessions available without reservation. The seating is generally first-come, first-served, encouraging early arrival for the best vantage points. The club’s location within Jazz at Lincoln Center places it in a lively cultural hub, making it ideal for a night that blends attentive listening with the pleasure of fine dining and cityscape views.
