Ms. Lisa Fischer featuring Orrin Evans Trio

Ms. Lisa Fischer joins the Orrin Evans Trio at Birdland for a set built around the meeting of Fischer’s voice and Evans’s piano-led arrangements. The billed collaboration moves through jazz, soul and beyond, with the trio framing a singer celebrated for exploring each song’s vocal possibilities. Birdland presents Fischer and Evans as partners whose work can range from duo and trio settings to the larger Captain Black Big Band; this night focuses on the trio format.

Raised in Brooklyn’s Fort Greene, Fischer is a Grammy-winning vocalist whose four-decade career includes work with the Rolling Stones, Luther Vandross, Sting, Tina Turner and Nine Inch Nails. Keith Richards has praised her “amazing power, energy, and projection.” Philadelphia-raised pianist and bandleader Evans is Grammy-nominated, leads the Captain Black Big Band and Tarbaby, and has worked with Bobby Watson, Ralph Peterson, the Mingus Big Band and The Bad Plus. The New York Times calls him “a viable candidate for jazz’s most resourceful and invigorating contemporary pianist.” A Backstage Bay Area review hears Fischer’s “soaring, acrobatic vocal power” alongside Evans’s “refined, inventive jazz arrangements.”
